Find Affordable & Voucher-Friendly Housing

We are not a housing authority. We never charge fees. Apply only through official PHA websites.

Section8Finder is building a verified directory of affordable and voucher-friendly housing resources. This page does not yet list individual rental vacancies, and we would rather tell you that plainly than show you something we cannot stand behind.

What this page will become

We are assembling housing information from official government sources — public housing authority (PHA) contact and jurisdiction records, HUD-assisted multifamily properties, and Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) properties. Each record will be published with its source, its program type, and the date it was last checked.

An important distinction

Government housing datasets describe properties that receive a subsidy or authorities that administer a program. They do not record vacancies, and they do not say whether a property is accepting applications.

  • A HUD-assisted property is a building with a HUD subsidy contract. It may be fully occupied, may have its own waiting list, and may serve a specific population such as seniors or people with disabilities.
  • A LIHTC property received federal tax credits, in some cases decades ago. That is a financing fact, not a vacancy, and it is not the same thing as Section 8.
  • A Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) waitlist is opened and closed by the housing authority, on its own schedule, and only the authority can tell you its current status.

We will never present any of these as an available unit. When a property appears here, it will be labelled for what it actually is, with the phone number you need to ask about availability yourself.

What you can use right now

How to search for a rental that accepts a voucher

Until this directory is live, these are the routes that actually work:

  1. Ask your housing authority for its landlord list. Most PHAs keep a list of landlords who have accepted vouchers before. It is usually free and it is usually not published online.
  2. Use AffordableHousing.gov, HUD’s own free rental listing service.
  3. Call HUD-assisted properties directly. Ask whether they have vacancies, whether they keep a waiting list, and what their eligibility rules are.
  4. Check whether source-of-income discrimination is prohibited where you live. In a growing number of states and cities, refusing a tenant solely because they hold a Housing Choice Voucher is unlawful.

What Section8Finder is not

We are an independent information resource. We do not administer vouchers, we do not accept or process applications, we cannot place you in housing, and we never charge for access to public information. If any website asks you to pay to apply for Section 8, do not pay — applications through a housing authority are free.
