Waitlists

We are not a housing authority. We never charge fees. Apply only through official PHA websites.

Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) waitlists are managed by local Public Housing Authorities (PHAs)—not by Section8Finder. Waitlist status, openings, and application rules vary by city and county.

How Section 8 Waitlists Work

Most PHAs maintain a waiting list because demand for vouchers exceeds available funding. When a waitlist opens, eligible households can apply online, by mail, or in person depending on local rules. Some lists stay closed for years; others open briefly for preference categories such as veterans, elderly residents, or people experiencing homelessness.

What You Can Do Now

  • Apply to every open waitlist in areas where you are willing to live
  • Keep your contact information current after you apply
  • Gather income, ID, and household documents before a list opens
  • Check housing authority websites regularly for reopening announcements

Browse by Location

Use our Section 8 by State directory to find housing authority links and local resources. City and waitlist detail pages are being expanded nationwide.
