Where our data comes from

Every number on Section8Finder comes from an official public dataset published by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) or the U.S. Census Bureau. Each data page names its sources and the date we last updated them. The full list, kept up to date automatically:

What this data cannot tell you

These federal datasets record housing authorities, subsidized and tax-credit properties, Fair Market Rents and income limits. They do not record vacancies, whether a waiting list is open, or whether a landlord accepts Housing Choice Vouchers. Those change constantly; only the housing authority or the property can confirm them.

How we check what we publish

  • We never mark a waiting list open unless we have confirmed it on the housing authority’s own website, and we show the date we checked.
  • A housing authority’s website is shown only after we have matched it against the authority’s official site.
  • When HUD publishes new figures (Fair Market Rents each October, income limits each spring), we update the affected pages.
